Toronto, Ontario — In a significant stride towards a sustainable future, �鶹�԰���Ӱ and Simplicity Car Care co-hosted the inaugural Automotive Industry Sustainability Summit. This landmark event, held in Toronto, aimed to drive the collision repair and auto claims industries towards net-zero emissions. The summit, attended by over 70 participants, included repairers, suppliers, and representatives from the insurance industry.

Launch of Automotive Sustainability Council of Canada (ASCC)

A highlight of the summit was the announcement of Automotive Sustainability Council of Canada (ASCC). This initiative, spearheaded by �鶹�԰���Ӱ and Simplicity Car Care, is open to all industry collaborators. Bill Brower, Senior VP of Global Industry Relations and North American Claims at �鶹�԰���Ӱ, emphasized that the council’s mission is to identify, discuss, and propose solutions to ensure a sustainable future for both the insurance and collision repair sectors. Collaborative engagement and the establishment of partnerships are key pillars of the council’s strategy.

Opening Remarks and Keynote Speech

Tony Graham, Executive Vice President at �鶹�԰���Ӱ kicked off the summit, inspiring us all. He reminded us that “We, as industry leaders, play a critical role in championing change for sustainability”

The keynote speaker, Helle Bank Jorgensen, Founder and CEO of Competent Boards, provided a global perspective on sustainability efforts. She stressed the urgency of proactive measures, quoting Wayne Gretzky, “Skate to where the puck is going to be.” Jorgensen’s top advice for businesses: “start now, collaborate, and use data to guide sustainable paths.”

“We can’t wait for regulations or visible climate change effects. It will be too late,” Jorgensen warned. She also highlighted the need to break down departmental silos and engage in cohesive sustainability efforts.

Executive Insurance Panel

Following Jorgensen’s speech, an executive insurance panel took the stage. Moderated by Jorgensen, the panel included Michelle Li from Aviva, Alena Kharkavets from Intact Insurance, Paul Reichert from LKQ Corporation, and Paul Prochilo from Simplicity Car Care.

The panel discussed various topics, including the importance of repairing rather than replacing parts to reduce carbon footprints. Prochilo noted, “Repairing parts whenever possible significantly reduces our carbon footprint. When repair isn’t an option, using green recycled parts can cut our carbon emissions by 42%.”

Reichert highlighted LKQ’s open-door policy for discussing sustainable practices, while Kharkavets underscored the critical role of education in driving sustainable processes. Li advocated for standardized data and methodologies to unify sustainability efforts across the industry.

Leveraging Technology for Sustainability

Bill Brower from �鶹�԰���Ӱ came on the stage following the executive panel. He presented on the role of technology in measuring and managing CO2 emissions within the automotive claims economy. He shared compelling statistics: 76% of consumers are likely to sever ties with companies that neglect environmental responsibility, and 80% of global investors consider ESG risk management crucial in investment decisions. Brower illustrated the impact of sustainable practices, such as how replacing 11 front bumpers can reduce carbon emissions by 236kg—equivalent to growing four tree seedlings over ten years.

The Inaugural Automotive Industry Sustainability Summit underscored the collective commitment to a greener future. By fostering collaboration, leveraging technology, and prioritizing education, the industry can pave the way to significant environmental improvements. The summit served as a call to action for all stakeholders to engage in sustainable practices today for a better tomorrow.
